Understanding Distinct Part Units and why long-term care hospitals should consider opening one

Written by Carrie O'Connell, RN

Long-term care acute hospitals (LTACHs) are a unique portion of the post-acute care continuum, providing care to just a small portion of the population. Historically, LTACHs have often cared for patients who don’t fit the very specific profile of an LTACH-appropriate patient.

New regulations have made it more difficult for LTACHs to treat these patients without risking serious hits to reimbursement dollars – dollars needed to provide care to those in need of intensive-care services. These regulations make it more difficult for LTACHs to provide value-based care to those in need.

As scrutiny and transparency increase, LTACHs must be ready to adapt to stay afloat. When considering how to diversify, LTACHs should keep distinct part units (DPUs) in mind. In this free white paper, learn how these portioned areas of hospitals help:

  • Alleviate pressure on the community by providing alternative centers of care for patients
  • Promote value-based care by reducing the number of ACH readmissions
  • Improve case-management, allowing clinicians more time to focus on treating the patient's symptoms
