Supporting clients, caregivers, and loved ones in a time of suffering is a challenge. As an agency you need to be able to equip yourself and your employees with tips and tools on how to navigate those trying times. This latest tip sheet from Dr. Carla Cheatham, MA, MDiv, PhD, TRT can help you do that.

These days, we may understand that polite conventions are designed to extend courtesy and compassion, but we have also grown to understand different and better ways to do so that may be more meaningful. Dr. Carla Cheatham is the Principal and Lead Trainer for Carla Cheatham Consulting Group, LLC. She began her career in social services with an MA in Psychology. She then gained her certification in trauma counseling, a Ph. D. in Health & Kinesiology, and M.Div. She is now a national keynote speaker, consultant, and coach focusing on emotional competencies for leaders, medical professionals, mental health counselors, health organizations, and family caregivers. Carla is the former Chair of NHPCOs Ethics Advisory Council, a member of NHPCO’s Trauma-Informed End of Life Care Work Group, former Leader of NHPCO’s Spiritual Caregivers Community, and Assistant Professor at University of Maryland for its MS in Palliative Care. She has served in child and family counseling, treatment centers, higher education, faith communities, and an interfaith non-profit organization, and previously worked for 10 years as a hospice bereavement coordinator and interfaith chaplain.

Dr. Cheatham is also the author of Hospice Whispers: Stories of Life and Sharing Our Stories: A Hospice Whispers Grief Support Workbook, and multiple articles and scholarly publications. Her next series of books on resilience, emotional intelligence for caregivers, the art of presence with suffering, and grief are anticipated in 2024.
