Stability in a world of change: Documenting medical necessity in IRFs

Presented by Jane Snecinski, President of Post Acute Advisors

The one constant in health care is change, and every year change causes inpatient rehabilitation (IRF) providers to scramble to meet new workflow and documentation requirements. Failure to follow these changes leads to denials and decreased reimbursements.

By making changes one at a time, IRF providers often fail to see the bigger picture: Documenting for medical necessity. Medical necessity has a direct impact on reimbursement.

This webinar will explore how medical necessity for IRF admissions are determined by CMS. Examples of actual denials will be discussed and used to explain ways to avoid reductions in reimbursements and denials.

In this webinar, attendees will learn:

  • How to create a definition of medical necessity of an admission unique to their program
  • How to identify key points in the patient stay to discuss medical necessity
  • The three critical questions that must be considered when determining medical necessity of admission
