Janette Sampson is a clinical nurse specialist at the NHS Leeds Teaching Hospital in the U.K. She specializes in hematology and allogenic stem cell transplants. Sampson trained as a registered nurse and has worked for 13 years at the bone marrow transplant unit, taking on various roles in oncology before returning to transplants as a specialist nurse six years ago. Her principal role is to support patients through the transplant process, addressing the physical, emotional, and psychological effects they experience throughout their journey. Sampson also provides essential information and support to families. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys traveling, keeping fit, and cooking.
Colin Baker is a survivor of myelodysplastic syndrome and a cord blood transplant recipient. He is semi-retired from a career as a salesman for pipeline products in the water and gas industry and has also retired from a career in football coaching at professional football clubs. Baker has always been fit and active, up into his mid-50s. In 2016, he was diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) due to persistent bruising and bleeding. After his brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer, Baker underwent tests and was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome in May of 2019. Despite the lack of a bone marrow stem cell match, Baker received a cord blood transplant at St. James Hospital Leeds, which saved his life. He is now 100% disease-free and his blood is 100% donor.
