Webinar Caring Smarter

People who choose a life of caring — and the organizations and communities they serve — deserve a special kind of support.

Cord blood answers the call: Treating a case of myelodysplastic syndrome

Join us for a webinar where we discuss the groundbreaking cord blood transplant process that saved a U.K.-based patient’s life.

You'll hear from the patient — Colin Baker, a survivor of myelodysplastic syndrome — as well as from a clinical nurse specializing in stem cell transplantation — Janette (Jan) Sampson — who was part of Colin's medical team at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in England.

Starting from diagnosis to treatment to stem cell transplant and then to recovery, this session will provide valuable insights into the entire blood transplant process and what is possible with innovative science and excellence in patient care.

Key learning objectives:

  • Understand the similarities between bone marrow and cord blood transplants
  • Hear from the perspectives of both patient and nurse
  • Discuss the critical role of nursing in the stem cell transplant process

Colin Baker | Survivor of myelodysplastic syndrome

Colin Baker is a survivor of myelodysplastic syndrome and a cord blood transplant recipient. He is semi-retired from a career as a salesman for pipeline products in the water and gas industry and has also retired from a career in football coaching at professional football clubs. Baker has always been fit and active, up into his mid-50s. In 2016, he was diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) due to persistent bruising and bleeding. After his brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer, Baker underwent tests and was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome in May of 2019. Despite the lack of a bone marrow stem cell match, Baker received a cord blood transplant at St. James Hospital Leeds, which saved his life. He is now 100% disease-free and his blood is 100% donor.
