FAQ about the Hospice Care Index

The Hospice Care Index (HCI), a claims-based quality measure included in the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP), reveals a lot about how a hospice agency cares for its patients. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) designed the HCI to provide a broad overview of hospice care quality from admission all the way to discharge. Unlike a single-indicator measure, the HCI considers 10 indicators together, adding the score for each one to calculate the total HCI score. It is also made up of elements that are likely to be affected by circumstances outside the hospice’s control. Understanding what those indicators are and how they are calculated is key to your HCI success.

Beth was a hospice and home health associate with The Corridor Group and with Pinnacle Enterprise Risk Consulting Services and has created study guides and questions for industry coding and compliance certification exams and online courses.
