FAQ about the Hospice Care Index

Written by Beth Noyce, RN, BSJMC, HCS-C, BCHH-C, COQS, of Noyce Consulting

The Hospice Care Index (HCI), a claims-based quality measure included in the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP), reveals a lot about how a hospice agency cares for its patients. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) designed the HCI to provide a broad overview of hospice care quality from admission all the way to discharge. Unlike a single-indicator measure, the HCI considers 10 indicators together, adding the score for each one to calculate the total HCI score. It is also made up of elements that are likely to be affected by circumstances outside the hospice’s control. Understanding what those indicators are and how they are calculated is key to your HCI success.

In a recent educational webinar from WellSky, home health and hospice consultant Beth Noyce, RN, BSJMC, HCS-C, BCHH-C, COQS, of Noyce Consulting, presented on HCI indicators and how hospice providers can improve their score with processes that demonstrate great patient care. That webinar is now available to watch on-demand. In this new tip sheet, Beth provides answers to the most frequently asked questions about the HCI.
