In August 2010, Kristin Kleinhofer was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and began a two-year journey of intense in-patient chemotherapy that ultimately failed to keep her in remission. By February 2014, the cancer had returned. With the support of her partner, Benny, and her mother, she began seeking immunotherapy clinical trial options after standard salvage chemotherapy and Phase II combination chemotherapy clinical trial efforts failed. Under the recommendation of her medical team, Kristin enrolled in an early Phase I/II clinical trial of chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in November 2014. Kristin was among the 93% of patients with ALL in early clinical trial results that reached remission. She then enrolled in a randomized Phase II clinical trial in February 2015, also taking place at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, which used double umbilical cord blood as the donor source for her stem cell transplant, as she had no match in the registry or within the family. Today, nine years later, Kristin continues to remain cancer-free and is passionate about patient advocacy efforts, mentoring fellow cancer patients and caregivers, sharing her message of hope and partnering with cancer research and supporting nonprofits.
