Songs evoke strong feelings and memories — a song can take us back to our first love, remind us of happy times in our childhood, or help us remember time spent with our friends. Research has recently indicated that the areas of the brain that store musical memories are relatively unaffected by Alzheimer’s, dementia, and Parkinson’s. Even the knowledge of how to play an instrument is tucked away in a part of the brain that can remain untouched by these ailments. Some studies have even reported that listening to music can help recall specific memories, names, faces, and places.
