Coding COVID-19

In late January, the World Health Organization (WHO) added code U07.1 to the international ICD-10 database in response to the declaration of the COVID-19 international public health emergency. To meet the urgent need to capture the reporting of COVID-19 in the United States’ claims and surveillance data, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released an unprecedented, off-cycle update to the ICD-10-CM, changing the effective date of the new diagnosis code from October 1st, 2020 to April 1st, 2020.

This new code was made available for coding assignment effective for discharges on or after April 1 in inpatient settings such as acute-care hospitals (ACHs) and long-term acute-care hospitals (LTACHs). It can also be coded for services provided on April 1 or later for physicians and settings of care such as skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), home health, and hospice.
