Overcoming isolation amid COVID-19:
Addressing new challenges in long-term care facilities

Melissa Tabor, LPN & Carrie O'Connell, RN

WellSky is working with top experts to bring you practical strategies and insightful interpretation of CMS and CDC guidance on the COVID-19 pandemic. These resources are not substitutes for the official sources, and providers should continue to track developments on official CMS and CDC pages, including:

As the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is taking critical measures to ensure the safety of vulnerable populations – including people who are immunocompromised and elderly.

To protect the elderly population, CMS, with guidance from the CDC, has instructed senior living providers to significantly restrict visitors and nonessential personnel from entering their facilities. Communal group activities have been restricted as well. Although these restrictions are in place to keep residents safe, they have also created a new set of challenges including, loneliness, isolation, and depression. Because surveyors are still completing reviews, facilities must be compliant with F-Tag 248 and provide an ongoing program of activities.

This free resource provides long-term care facilities and skilled-nursing facilities with the information needed to:

    • Identify key signs of loneliness in residents
    • Keep residents engaged with family, friends, and other residents
