Understanding telehealth in rehabilitation during the age of COVID-19

Social distancing orders, shelter in place orders, and the definition of essential services have changed how certain healthcare services are delivered. In an attempt to “flatten the curve” and keep patients and providers safe, telehealth encounters are becoming more important to ensure outcomes are not impacted.

In March, Medicare’s telehealth coverage was expanded and now includes several rehabilitation services. Unfortunately, CMS has not yet made changes to the types of providers authorized to provide telehealth services, making it unclear how rehabilitation providers can effectively utilize telehealth services.

In this free tip sheet, Jeff S. Baird, JD and Kelly T. Custer, JD of Brown & Fortunato, PC provide a brief analysis of how rehabilitation providers can use temporarily approved telehealth services in their facilities or practices.

  • Which codes have been temporarily approved for telehealth services
  • Why e-visits are important for rehabilitation providers
  • How to use telehealth services while maintaining HIPAA compliance
