Webinar Caring Smarter

People who choose a life of caring — and the organizations and communities they serve — deserve a special kind of support.

Transform your organization and the outcomes you achieve by looking beyond stigma

WATCH ON DEMAND

As communities work to address the growing problems of homelessness, substance-use disorders, and mental health issues, they must also overcome a workforce crisis that has made it more difficult to properly staff the organizations serving on the front lines. One solution is to mobilize people with lived experiences — those who have experienced homelessness, problematic substance use, mental health disorders, or were involved in the legal system.

Hear how one agency has achieved amazing results by opening the door to people with lived experiences. The story of Eastern Carolina Housing Organization (ECHO) will inspire you and also provide a framework to help you better serve your community.

Learning objectives

  • Examine the harmful stigma tied to substance-use disorders and homelessness
  • Recognize the benefits of looking beyond stigma in hiring practices
  • See the positive outcomes ECHO has achieved

You will discover how ECHO's approach benefits both the organization and the community, fostering positive change and demonstrating the powerful impact of inclusive employment. Watch now to explore how integrating diverse experiences can create a more dynamic and resilient team to drive your mission forward!

Julie Meaney

Julie Meaney
Chief Development Officer, Eastern Carolina Housing Organization

Julie began her nonprofit career at Eastern Carolina Housing Organization (ECHO) in 2016 as a volunteer with a passion for service work and harm reduction, inspired by her own recovery from substance use disorder and homelessness. She immediately connected with ECHO’s mission and has since served in multiple positions before being named Chief Development Officer in 2022. Before lived experience reshaped her priorities, Julie spent over a decade as a business analyst in the investment services industry. Through this experience, she learned the value of a long-term perspective, commitment to ethical practice, and fostering a collaborative culture to uncover the story within the story, the risks, and the potential rewards.

Kelly Frech

Kelly Frech
Community Development Specialist, Eastern Carolina Housing Organization

Kelly spent most of her career in food service management and customer service. In 2019, her life took an unexpected turn when she began her recovery from opiate use disorder. Motivated by a desire to positively impact her community, she decided to pivot her career and apply her business skills to the non-profit sector. She found the perfect opportunity at ECHO and couldn't be happier with her choice. When not battling imposter syndrome, Kelly enjoys visiting state parks, going to the beach, and spending quality time with her significant other, their Dorgi puppy, and two cats.
