Telehealth in inpatient rehabilitation: What it is, when to use it, and why it matters

On April 6, 2020, CMS published the interim final rule with comment period (IFC) for Medicare & Medicaid Programs; Policy and Regulatory Revisions in Response to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (IFC-1).

The IFC ultimately provided a wide range of emergency provisions for providers to free up hospital beds and resources to care for critically ill COVID-19 patients. The legislation outlined modifications of the rules and regulations that provide the infrastructure for various levels of care.

The COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) was recently extended. This extension means that inpatient rehabilitation providers can continue to use telehealth in an expanded capacity. The PHE extension also gives inpatient rehabilitation providers more time to review telehealth provisions and ensure that their teams are documenting to ensure compliance.
