Dementia during COVID-19: how to provide exceptional care in long-term care facilities during a public health emergency

Presented by:
Scott Heichel, RN, RAC-MT, RAC-CTA, DNS-CT, CIC, QCP, IPCO

At least half of older adults living in long-term care facilities suffer from cognitive impairments, including dementia. To care for these individuals, your staff must understand their behavior as agitation, sudden sadness, or new-onset confusion could indicate worsening symptoms of dementia. But today, your team faces additional challenges as these signs and symptoms may indicate a COVID-19 infection.

Providing care to residents with dementia during COVID-19 has presented long-term care organizations with new challenges. Whether weighing the risks and benefits of moving residents to designated COVID-19 units or exploring options to keep staff safe with the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), you need guidance you can trust to provide the level of care your residents need.

In this free webinar experienced long-term care expert Scott Heichel provides guidance on the:

  • Challenges that the public health emergency creates for caring for residents with dementia
  • Techniques that should be used while caring for dementia residents
  • Best way to assess dementia residents for signs and symptoms of COVID-19
