Why documentation in inpatient rehabilitation matters:
Reducing the risk for inpatient rehabilitation providers as CMS audits resume
People who choose a life of caring — and the organizations and communities they serve — deserve a special kind of support.
The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) suspended audits between March and August of 2020. Over the last year, providers have not only seen audits return, but have seen a significant increase in Additional Documentation Requests (ADRs) from CMS external contractors and other federal agencies.
Inpatient rehabilitation organizations and units can expect to be the target of this increase in CMS audits due to a history of poor performance. The latest Office of Inspector General (OIG) reports found that 80% of 2018 inpatient rehabilitation claims did not include documentation to support IRF care in accordance with Medicare’s requirements.
To prepare for audits, inpatient rehabilitation leaders must understand what auditors are looking for so they can easily identify risks for their facility or unit. During this webinar, inpatient rehabilitation expert Jane Snecinski will review how proper documentation can minimize the chances of a CMS audit.
