COVID-19 has required providers in many settings of care to furlough caregivers and support staff in response to dwindling patient demand. Even as areas of the country begin to open facilities for elective procedures and care, the volume will remain at historic lows as patients delay care over COVID-19 fears. As America finds a new normal, and patient demand increases, organizations and agencies must take a balanced approach to reopening facilities, bringing staff back to work safely and efficiently.

By building a resource plan that marries anticipated volumes with an understanding of historical resource unproductive and utilization gaps, activities that can be capably handled by other staff, and scheduling processes, providers can develop new, lean processes and policies that maintain high patient quality and satisfaction while controlling cost.
