Revisiting PDPM: Factors that determine when to complete the Interim Payment Assessment

The Interim Payment Assessment (IPA) was first introduced to skilled nursing providers under the Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM). This assessment is optional. There are no penalties for completing or not completing the IPA.

Though optional, the IPA ensures that skilled nursing providers receive reimbursement that truly reflects the care they provide. To determine when to complete the IPA, skilled nursing providers must consider several factors.

In this tip sheet, Scott Heichel, Director of Clinical Reimbursement at LeaderStat, reviews several factors that should be considered before completing the IPA.

Download the tip sheet to learn:

  • Why communicating and sharing patient information with the interdisciplinary team is critical
  • Which components of Section GG, the BIMS, and the Patient-Health Questionnaire can help your team determine if an IPA should be completed
  • Why your facility should set rate expectations
